The lives and writings of Charlotte, Branwell, Emily and Anne Bronte have fascinated and captivated generations of readers. We will explore their novels and poetry within the context of their sad and ultimately tragic lives. Most of the major novels will be considered,including as well as some of their poetry, letters and juvenilia. The novels will include: Charlotte Bronte: Jane Eyre Emily Bronte: Wuthering Heights Anne Bronte: The Tenant of Wildfell Hall NB Other novels by Charlotte and Anne Bronte will be considered, if time allows. Poems, letters and juvenilia by all four siblings.

Course aim

The course will aim to provide an understanding and appreciation of the life and writings of the Brontes

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • approach texts with an enhanced critical awareness
  • express ideas and opinions with increased confidence
  • have an understanding of the writings of the Brontes in the context of their lives

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
