Great Reads from Around the World 2

Ref: C2419958

Different languages, cultures and traditions underpin our selection of fiction from across the world. In narratives drawn from the 20th and 21st centuries, we focus on works which have been prizewinners and whose reputations have crossed international boundaries. From historical and postcolonial concerns to political and social issues, we inspect changes in the development of narrative forms and techniques in a variety of their original contexts. Included in the course are novels by Vladimir Nabokov, Nadine Gordimer, Perez Galdos and Muriel Spark, and we discuss the importance of their themes and approaches to fiction, still relevant for us in 2019.

Course aim

In fiction ranging from Russia to South Africa and Nigeria, we examine distinguished and stimulating examples of narrative, and analyse common themes, techniques and concerns.
