London Art Galleries, Museums and Historic Houses

London has a very full treasury of art galleries, museums and historical houses. Each week different venues will be studied – both the history and the contents – from the list below. As well as the “Big Five” - Tate Modern, Tate Britain, National Gallery, British Museum, V&A Museum - London's smaller galleries will be explored. Whether you're into fine art, sculpture, photography, contemporary works or arty events, you will find hidden gems to satisfy your artistic interests: The Saatchi and Serpentine Galleries (contemporary art), Somerset House, Whitechapel Gallery, Camden Arts Centre, Courtauld Gallery, Dulwich Picture Gallery, Guildhall Art Gallery, Newport Street Gallery, Pump House Gallery, Queen's Gallery, The Wallace Collection, White Cube, Kenwood Gallery, plus historical houses with significant art collections. The course will help you appreciate the art works with greater knowledge and confidence, either in the galleries, or at home.

Course aim

London Art Galleries, Museums and Historical Houses (continuation). The course will examine a selection of the art galleries, museums and historical houses in London, with the aim of enhancing enjoyment of the art found there.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a level 2 qualification in English to join this course

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • To be more aware of the public art venues in London and their specialisms
  • To structure visits to the public art venues more productively
  • To view art works more critically

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • Fully illustrated notes will be provided for all the lectures. In addition all the PowerPoint presentations will be available for any student who requests.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • If possible, you should visit as many of the galleries etc listed above, or use the internet to explore them through their web sites, or use visitors guide books to London art galleries such as "The Rough Guide to London" or many others.

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Participants will be encouraged to become a volunteer guide (or general helper) at the galleries, museums and historical houses, or consider more advanced courses in art history, and qualifications in guiding and museum work.
