In this course we review some of the most important recordings in jazz, blues & popular music - which were put out on record labels that remain iconic today. Labels like Chess, Sun, Blue Note, & Atlantic released influential singles & albums for a new generation - sounds which continue to define popular music We find out more about the music on these important recordings - & meet the legendary record owners & producers who put together the sound, artwork & vinyl to make timeless music.

Course aim

To provide an introduction to the record labels which helped to shape popular music.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand why each record company we review was important to the development of the music
  • Understand how these record companies achieved their special impact on popular music
  • Understand some of the diverse social & cultural contexts surrounding these influential recordings

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
