This course will look in detail at three wonderful and contrasting novels ranging from the 70s to last year. We will examine the context and background to each novel and open up discussion to the whole group. We are an inclusive group who love new members and different view-points. No previous experience required only a love of literature and an enquiring mind.

This course will analyse three contrasting novels ranging from the 70s to last year. We will examine the context behind each novel and open up discussion to the whole group. We are an inclusive group who love new members and different view-points.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Develop new textual appreciation of three wonderful contemporary novels
  • Engage in group discussion and share different perspectives
  • Develop knowledge about the context of the three novels and their reception

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • The main work outside the lessons will be close reading in preparation for each lesson.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Each student does need a copy of the three texts. - Surfacing - Margaret Attwood - Days Without End - Sebastian Barry - Missing Fay - Adam Thorpe All extra sources will be provided as hand-outs by the tutor.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • If you have time and want to do extra research you could look at the historical or geographical background to each of the novels. Another option would be to read other works by the same author.

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
