Yoga, Mindfulness and Relaxation

This course is suitable for those with little or no experience of meditation or yoga as well as those with experience. It will be a basic, practical and down to earth course looking at what mindfulness is, how to practice mindfulness breathing meditation and how to bring mindfulness into everyday life. We will work too on basic mindful yoga movements adapted to the needs of the individual whereby we stretch, strengthen and relax the whole of the body. Each session will finish with body scan and a guided relaxation. To get the most out of this course you will need to practice at home.

Course aim

This course will look at mindfulness in action, how to bring mindfulness into everyday life and thus enhance day to day living and general well-being.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Practice mindfulness breathing meditation.
  • Practice the body scan.
  • practice basic yoga movements with awareness and the breath.
  • Understand how to bring mindfulness into everyday life.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • You may need a yoga mat

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
