Kirsty will take you on a creative journey in a relaxed and supportive environment where you will have the opportunity to explore diverse approaches to creating exciting art works with a focus on the human form. We will experiment with lighting and colour, texture, pattern and composition; studying the work of other artists for inspiration. Content includes quick poses to loosen up, and many forms of experimental drawing, including unconventional materials and techniques.

Course aim

Explore the art of drawing the figure, experimenting with a variety of techniques and mediums, taking inspiration from diverse artistic styles.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Beginners: Begin drawing the nude figure, gaining an understanding of anatomical proportion.
  • Beginners and improvers: Work in experimental ways with diverse mediums and techniques, gaining confidence in your work
  • Returning learners: Sketch short poses with a sense of dynamism and confidence, improving on your drawing techniques, and developing your own style
  • Relate your work to art historical input via PowerPoint presentations
  • Practise unconventional techniques and materials that are new to you

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Basic drawing equipment such as: Sketching pencils, charcoal, and fixative, eraser (plastic please, not rubber). Paint brushes A2 drawing pad with heavyweight cartridge paper. You may want to build on your own art materials kit throughout the course.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
