This course will continue the exploration and examination of different artistic themes. Students will be guided and encouraged to recognise artistic techniques, styles and genres. These will then be discussed within the group and in an informal and positive environment the students will be free to express their thoughts about the various elements of the course. Assessments will be made of various artists and genres characteristics. The knowledge that is gathered will be then applied in practical tasks that expand an individuals creative skills. Practical work will be created that illustrates an understanding of the course various subjects and themes.

Course aim

The aim of the course is to continue to explore and examine various artistic techniques, styles and genres.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • recognise artistic techniques, styles and genres.
  • have discussed and expressed thoughts about various elements on the course.
  • have assessed artists and genre characteristics.
  • have applied knowledge to expand individual creative skills.
  • have created practical work that illustrates an understanding of the courses various themes.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • The addition of essential items will be beneficial to you on the course. These include watercolour paper, sketch pads, drawing materials, mixed media materials and equipment, specialist brushes and a variety of pigments and paints.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
