Mixed Sewing Skills

Students will learn a variety of hand and machine sewing skills and have the opportunity to complete a variety of projects which will be designed to help them develop and advance their skills. They will have the chance to make a variety of spring themed items, if they wish, or be supported to make something of their own choice. There may also be the opportunity to develop other skills such as embroidery or patchwork etc through completion of tasks or their own projects. Students will be encouraged to share their skills with their peers if they are comfortable in doing so.

Course aim

This course aims to provide basic sewing skills for beginners and improving technique for those with more experience.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a variety of hand sewing techniques.
  • Use a sewing machine to complete basic or more advanced tasks depending upon level of experience.
  • Identify appropriate fabrics and sewing techniques to suit desired projects.
  • Cur from commerciial patterns, understand sizing and symbols. Adapt patterns to fit.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Students to provide basic equipment eg scissors, unpicker, tape measure, pins, needles plus fabrics, threads and commercial patterns as needed. Can bring sewing machine if PAT tested.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
