Advanced Pattern Cutting and Sewing Pockets

Students will learn advanced pattern cutting and construction skills by developing three demanding pocket patterns and manufacturing them using taught sewing skills. Learning achieved by completing pattern cutting and sewing activities including measuring, pattern cutting, fabric preparation, basic sewing skills and component construction. Course very suitable to students looking to improve their quality of sewing whilst learning pattern cutting. Course is suitable for students with basic sewing skills and some previous experience working with patterns. This course will develop a high social aspect and you will gain confidence working in a group setting.

Course aim

Workshop where students will be introduced to more advanced pattern cutting techniques to design, pattern cut and manufacture three different pocket designs: 3D patch pocket, welt and jet pocket, and jeans pocket.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Learn to develop a pattern from scratch.
  • Measure, prepare and cut fabric correctly.
  • Learn sewing skills by constructing well finished pockets.
  • Design, pattern cut and sew three different pockets.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Learners are expected to provide their own fabrics (1m) for their projects. (medium weight, 100% cotton, plain, light colour/un-dyed) Learners need to bring 1-2m of pattern paper to first session. Learners can bring their own sewing and pattern packs: 2H pencils, eraser, ruler, etc.
