The Crusades - God's War

The course will consider the enduring legacy of the crusades and jihad in the 21st Century world moving back from modern constructs to explore the origins and development of the idea in its historical context.

Course aim

To gain an appreciation of the significance of the 'Crusades' , their enduring legacy and to demonstrate the complexity of relationships between co-religionists, both Christian and Muslim.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • The course is for anyone with an interest in the past who wants to gain a deeper understanding of a watershed moment in World History.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Outline the chronology of the first three crusades
  • Identify the driving forces behind their origins
  • Recognise the key figures in the wars
  • Explore the reaction of Muslims to the Christian invasions
  • Explain the key elements of Christian belief within a medieval context

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Students keen to read in advance should consider one of the following: The Crusades 1095-1197 Jonathan Phillips God’s War, Christopher Tyerman B. Hamilton, The Crusades (1988) S. Runciman, A History of the Crusades, 3 vols (1951-4)
