The course is designed for anyone interested in exploring calligraphy, from beginners to improvers. Students will be shown how to execute traditional styles of lettering, such as Copperplate and Roman, using traditional media (pen and ink) before going on to explore innovative approaches to both lettering and presentation.

Course aim

The course aims to expand students' knowledge and experience of traditional and innovative approaches to calligraphy.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Produce written texts in at least two traditional styles
  • Produce calligraphy that attests an understanding of contemporary approaches to visual language
  • Write confidently with a nibbed pen
  • Write confidently with a fibre tipped calligraphy pen

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
