Two Railway Lines: A History

The course will commence by looking at the national. regional and local context within which railways began to develop in the region. The focus will then turn to the two main line railways which served Nottingham. These are: The Midland Railway's main line to London The Great Central Railway The rationale for the these lines will be discussed and the route of each railway between Nottingham and London and the location of stations will be identified. Key public figures whose ambition contributed to these developments will be introduced set in the context of the times in which they lived.

Course aim

The aims of the course are to introduce participants to the history of Nottingham's two main lines to London and to see these in the context of railway development across the region.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • An interest in local history will be useful.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Set the two main lines in the context of regional railway development
  • Recall the factors which led to the development of these railway lines
  • Identify the key players in these railway developments

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Tutor inputs will include slides, documents and maps.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • Reading glasses will be useful for exploring documents and maps.

  • There are many local history groups which have an interest in railways. Some national societies have regional groups.
