The last ruler of Egypt’s Ptolemaic dynasty and the final pharaoh in ancient Egyptian history, Cleopatra VII was Greek by descent and Egyptian by inheritance. She succeeded to the throne of Egypt in 51 BCE at the age of seventeen, ruling from her capital city of Alexandria. What was the Egypt she had inherited, and what was the legacy that she left to its history?

Course aim

An introduction to the Ptolemaic period of Egypt’s ancient history from 305 to 30 BC giving a background to the political and social development in this ancient land of the pharaohs, during what was its final dynastic period.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify major geographical areas of importance in Ptolemaic Egypt Recognize the art and sculpture of the period
  • Develop an understanding of the dynastic ‘king list’ of this period
  • Recognize the art and sculpture of the period
  • Appreciate the importance of archaeological and classical written sources of the period.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students will be encouraged to expand on the notes in the session handouts and to seek information for themselves from a variety of resources. This information may be informally shared and exchanged with the group.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Informal assessment using discussions, debate, questions & answers, and a quiz will be used by the tutor to ensure that learners are making progress throughout the course.

What else do I need to know?

  • Pen/pencil and paper for note taking would be an advantage
