Between 1923-47 the Railway companies produced a plethora of publicity material which captures the essence of the era. Fully illustrated with discussion.

Course aim

To explore a range of Railway poster publicity & how it developed visually from letterpress to bold colourful pictorial images, within the socio-historical context of the railways in the 1920s & 30s.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Contribute to constructive discussion about the posters studied
  • Realise the extent of the Railways’ publicity output & the context in which it was produced
  • Recognise the styles of the poster art of the 1920s & 30s
  • Consider how the Railways presented a brand image with the posters
  • Explore the historical/social & artistic background of the posters

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • A pen & notebook may be of use for taking notes
