Planning for Housing and Green Spaces: Case Studies

Planning has the positive potential to create places people want to live in, but often it turns into a blame game: Local Planning Authorities for slow decisions, local people for 'just saying no' to new housing, and developers for building the wrong houses in the wrong places. This course is an opportunity through 'hands-on' case studies (realistic but invented for the purpose of the course) to experience the issues involved from different angles - the local people affected by housing need or loss of valued green spaces; the developer needing to make a profit; the small housing company trying to provide quality housing people need; the Local Planning Authority expected to meet housing targets while protecting what local people value.

Course aim

An opportunity to test English planning principles and policies using realistic case studies showing issues around housing demand, protecting Green Belt, developing brownfield sites, adequate transport and other services.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • It will be useful to have attended 'Planning for Housing and Green Spaces: An Introduction' (02/03/19), but the key principles will be given before starting on the case studies. The tutor will be happy to explain general planning issues.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • summarize the planning principles applied to a case study
  • outline the issues arsing from a case study from at least two different angles - for example, from the developer's and the local people's points of view
  • argue in favour of a particular solution from at least one angle - for example, the Local Planning Authority's or that of a small houisng provider
  • counter arguments for a conflicting solution from a different angle
  • suggest changes to planning principles which may make resolving conflicts and finding solutions easier

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
