Bird Watching Through the Seasons

Ref: C2340998

Field visits involving fairly easy walks to learn about birds and their habitats. Meeting at different venues, at 10am on a Tuesday of each month, from January through to April, you will witness how the birds change through the seasons. Please bring appropriate outdoor clothing and footwear plus your binoculars to all sessions. We begin on 29th January in the Visitor Centre at Old Moor Wetland Centre (Post code S73 0YF), where you will be briefed on how to find the other venues, before we go outdoors to explore the reserve until 3pm, with lunch in the Visitor Centre. Subsequent meetings will be as follows; 26th February, 10am – 3pm at Middleton Lakes Nature Reserve, 26th March, 10am – 3pm at Rutland Water, 2nd April, 10am – 3pm at North Cave Wetlands.

Course aim

The emphasis of this course will be on the enjoyment of birds and nature by encouraging course members of all levels to discover some of the top birding venues within 60 miles of Matlock, and to identify the birds which use these different habitats.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise a variety of birds (resident and visitors)
  • Distinguish between resident birds & visitors
  • Use a field guide more competently
  • Compile a list of birds seen on the course

How will I be taught?

  • The tutor will point out birds by sight and sound and will also test learners on identifying birds by sight and sound. The tutor will show the birds in a telescope whenever possible.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • As the tutor informally tests the group on bird identification by sight and sound, learners can gauge their personal progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • Binoculars are essential and a fieldguide (bird book) would be useful.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • • to another birdwatching course at a different time of year and in different habitats • to a birdwatching day trip, weekend or longer holiday • to becoming a member of a conservation group
