Creative Writing

A general course for writers wishing to commit to regular writing sessions across a variety of disciplines and to improve writing through learning the craft and feeding back to others in the group. There will be weekly writing exercises to get you started, optional assignments to complete between classes and an opportunity to share your work each week and offer and receive feedback. We will cover a range of areas including writing fiction, short stories, poems and life writing.Suitable for beginners and improvers.

Course aim

This 10 week course will get you writing in a variety of disciplines, sharing your work and feeding back on the work of other class members. It is a friendly and supportive environment to learn the basics about the craft of writing.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Show I have taken part in writing exercises
  • Demonstrate a greater understanding of what makes poetry, fiction and/or life writing
  • Feel more confident to share my work with the group and to comment constructively on the work of others.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Just bring something to write on and with.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
