Colour, brushwork and the expressive potential of art has changed over time. Explore some of the exciting developments in the creative process in the works of artists including Delacroix, Franz Marc, Edvard Munch, Alexei Jawlensky and Ivon Hitchens. No experience necessary - just a lively, open-minded interest in art!

Course aim

To explore how approaches to colour, brushwork and the expressive potential of art have developed in the work of a range of twentieth century artists

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognize some of the major works of the artists under discussion - Eugene Delacroix, Franz Marc, Vasily Kandinsky, Edvard Munch, Alexei Jawlensky, Ivon Hitchens and Willem de Kooning
  • Identify some of the different approaches to colour, brushwork and the expressive potential in their work
  • Evaluate some of the key aesthetic, cultural and social influences on their work

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Continuous monitoring of progress will occur through group tasks and learner feedback of findings

What else do I need to know?

  • A folder in which to keep handouts would be useful

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Recommended reading: booklists and websites will be suggested throughout the course and included in each session handout
