Intensive Creative Writing Workshop Two

This short, intensive course is taught by a published writer and is divided into two sections between poetry and prose. The idea is that over four intensive sessions, writers concentrate on making work, editing and crafting it, until the work is the best that it can be. So come, improve your skills, and have a go.

Course aim

This course is aimed at writers wanting to use a short course to raise their skills in both poetry and prose.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • All welcome and no experienced assumed, for more seasoned writers, it may be that your knowledge gets expanded and that your words also benefit new learners.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise key ideas in making stories.
  • Improve and expand your poetic vocabulary.
  • Recognise techniques in crafting and editing work.
  • Expand those techniques mentioned above.
  • Learn how to make the most of writing notes.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Keeping a writer's notebook - whatever form, electronic or otherwise this may take.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Tutor happy to take longer pieces home to read and comment on - make sure you say if you don't want work written on.

What else do I need to know?

  • pen, paper, folder, writer's notebook of whatever form.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No reading list, but websites, apps and, most importantly, books, recommended. Tutor's current books are Brand New Beat, stories, and Mr Bowlly Regrets, poems, both King's England, 2017.
