Intensive Creative Writing Workshop One

This intensive course deals with creative writing and how to make the most of your poems and stories. Taught by a published writer, it also considers how to edit and polish work. The longer sessions enable writers to spend more time on specific pieces.

Course aim

To write creatively using intensive methods in both poetry and prose, and make the most of your words.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No knowledge assumed and new and more practised students are welcome.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise how to structure a short story
  • Have a go at new poetry techniques
  • Recognise skills that help to craft and polish work
  • Think about sending work out should you so wish
  • Feel confident enough to cut and change your work

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Keep a writer's notebook - whatever form, electronic or paper this may take.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • pen, paper, folder and notebook

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No course texts but websites, apps, and books, most importantly, recommended. Tutor's current books, Mr Bowlly Regrets, poems, and Brand New Beat, both King's England, 2017.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
