Weeks 2, 5, 8 will concentrate on different elements of the craft of writing. Weeks 3, 6, 9 will be exercise weeks to stimulate new work. Weeks 4, 7, 10 will focus on close criticism with students bringing copies of their work for other class members to read. Week 11 will be reflection on learning. The course is designed for students who have already completed courses with Alison Dunne but other learners are not excluded.

Course aim

A course to stretch learners with some experience. We set clear writing goals for the term, set exercises to stimulate new work, look at the craft of writing & also encourage constructive criticism for which learners bring copies of their work.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Show the development of my specific agreed longer writing project including work at home.
  • Show I have given constructive criticism/feedback to other members of the course on their writing projects.
  • Demonstrate I have taken part in writing exercises
  • Demonstrate I have taken part in class discussions on the craft of writing.
  • Show that I have researched possible markets of my work and am working towards an eventual goal of submission of work.

How will I be taught?

  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need to bring a notebook/paper and something to write with. You will need to provide copies of your work for other students to read and feed back on.
