The Archaeology of Anglo-Saxon England

Who were the Anglo-Saxons? Where did they come from? What was their life like? What evidence do we have from archaeology and history? This course sets out to examine those questions and more. Everyone welcome; no previous knowledge assumed.

Course aim

The course sets out to examine who the Anglo-Saxons were, where they came from, and what their life was like using evidence from history and archaeology.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify when the Anglo-Saxon period starts and ends in Britain
  • List at least three Anglo-Saxon sites in Britain
  • List at least three different types of evidence used by archaeologists studying Anglo-Saxon England
  • Discuss what life would have been like in Anglo-Saxon England

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • We will take a topical approach with each session focusing on a different aspect of Anglo-Saxon England.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Essential reading will be provided. Learners are recommended to bring a pen and notepad and a folder for their notes.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
