A one-day workshop covering the roles of Members of Parliament, the passage of a Bill and how to influence your MP.

Course aim

Beyond the rituals and the theatre of Westminster, this course will give basic insight into parliamentary procedure, how Parliament works in relation to government and how people can have an influence on what happens.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the main roles of a Member of Parliament
  • Describe the main stages of the passage of a Bill in Parliament
  • Describe a range of effective ways to influence your MP

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • How Parliament Works by Robert Rogers and Rhodri Walters Parliament and the law (The Open University)
