Gainsborough: Art and Music in 18th Century Bath

Though Thomas Gainsborough was by profession a painter, this course will feature a number of his portraits that introduce us into his great passion - music. We'll explore the cultural life in Georgian Bath, learn about the people who posed for Gainsborough and listen to the music they would have composed and played.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to provide an insight into how art and music coincided in Georgian Bath through the paintings of Thomas Gainsborough and the music of his friends who included amongst others J C Bach and Karl Friedrich Abel.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • identify a range of portraits by Thomas Gainsborough
  • Show awareness of the style and innovation in Gainsborough's work
  • Show awareness of the style of music of the time
  • Understand the artistic connection between Gainsborough and his musical friends

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
