A fun course exploring a variety of craft projects using as many recycled and reclaimed materials as possible. Learn crafting skills in a supportive environment and enjoy creating unique items.Dependent on interest and abilities, activities may include the following 1. Paper flowers –learn techniques to make several different types of paper flowers.Work towards creating your own bouquet, posy or corsage. 2. Jewellery –try your hand at making jewellery from scratch. Paper beads will be combined with recycled bits from old jewellery and fabric scraps to make new, unique items 3. Upcycling neckties –use neckties to make a small purse, fabric bracelet cuff or rosette brooch 4. Build a character –material scraps, buttons and oddments will be used to make a finger puppet, peg-doll, keyring or brooch – the only limitation is your imagination 5. Mixed media collage –make a card, picture or frame using found items 6. Micro Mosaics –use pre-loved beads to make mini mosaic designs

Course aim

Enjoy crafting in a fun and relaxed atmosphere using a variety of materials and different techniques. Learn new crafting skills in a supportive environment whilst gaining the satisfaction of turning basic materials into something new and delightful.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use recycled materials to make new items.
  • Make an item using paper
  • Identify basic craft materials, supplies and tools

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
