Lincolnshire has over 700 parish churches each with a fascinating story to tell. Explore the diversity of parish churches in Lincolnshire from Saxon times, discover a wealth of architectural styles and features and investigate a selection of intriguing facts, stories and legends. This introductory course will also look at how evidence associated with churches can help us learn about people in the past and how they lived.

Course aim

To introduce the rich diversity of churches in Lincolnshire from Saxon times and learn about their history, architectural styles and features.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This is an introductory course and no previous knowledge is assumed.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Recognise the role of the medieval church in Lincolnshire
  • Identify five common features within a church and understand their function
  • Recognise three different periods of church architecture
  • Have an increased knowledge of churches in Lincolnshire and the stories they have to tell.
  • Know where to access further information and resources

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
