The following themes will be considered during the 8 week course: - The Jewish and Arab claims to Palestine - The secret diplomacy during the First World War and the Balfour Declaration - The League of Nations mandates in the Middle East - British rule in Palestine 1919-1039 - How the Second World War and the Holocaust influenced Zionism - The creation of Israel and the 1948 war - Arab-Israeli wars between 1956-1973 and the spread of terrorism

Course aim

The course focuses on the conflict in the Middle East through a study of the relationship between Arabs and Jews in Palestine between 1917 and 1973. From Balfour to Black September.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • The course is aimed at anyone with an interest in History and a desire to study the complex background to the conflict in the middle East which still resonates today.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the complex war time diplomacy that led to the Balfour Declaration in 1917.
  • Identify and distinguish the competing historical claims of the Jews and Arabs to palestine.
  • Recognize and question the effect of the League of Nations mandates in the Middle East.
  • Analyse and evaluate British policy in Palestine from 1919-1947
  • Interpret how the Second World War and the Holocaust influenced Zionism and exacerbated conflict in Palestine.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
