Gilbert and Sullivan's Savoy Operas remain very popular and form part of the national culture. In this course we shall be examining the operas within their cultural and theatrical contexts. Along the way we will be looking at the lives and careers of G & S. We will look at Sullivan's non-Savoy music and Gilbert's ballads and plays. We will also be looking at the history of the D'Oyly carte company and hearing some very early recordings of the operas. I hope all this will deepen an understanding of some delightful music which is occasionally taken for granted and misunderstood
