Pottery: Create with Clay

This course is designed for both beginners and those with some experience who wish to revisit techniques. Learn how to design, make and decorate pottery work using earthenware clays, slips, underglazes and glazes. Explore handuilding techniques such as pinching, coiling and slabbing. Surface pattern and texture applied with the use of stencils, stamps and tools. Colour added to clay work through the application of slips, underglazes and glazes. Plant and animal forms will be used as a starting point for generating ideas for clay forms and surface decoration. Develop your creative skills and bring your ideas to life. Experience the excitement of the pottery process from raw clay to the fired kiln.

Course aim

To develop skills in designing, making and decorating handbuilt pottery using earthenware clays, slips and glazes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Design and make clay forms which are based on plant and/or animal life
  • Abstract shapes, patterns and textures from observations
  • Demonstrate mark making and application of colour to the clay surface
  • Explain clay shrinkage as part of the design process

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • There is a materials fee of £12.00 to cover the cost of clay and glaze used. This can be claimed back by those students who are in receipt of certain benefits. Please bring a suitable apron.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
