Northamptonshire: Its History

The course will begin with an overview of the strategic and historic importance of Northamptonshire. We will also look at historical sources, what they are and how to use them. Over subsequent weeks we will examine the significant military and some political events that took place in the county, from the Romans, the two Baron’s Wars, the Wars of the Roses, through the English Civil War and beyond.

Course aim

The aims of this course is to introduce learners to the history of Northamptonshire and the many wars and rebellions that took place there.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Summarise the importance of Northampton in the history of the UK
  • Explain significant military events related to Northamptonshire
  • List sites of historical importance in the county
  • Evaluate the reliability of primary source material, printed and manuscript
  • Develop skills of research and analysis

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A notebook and pen will be required to make notes. Some of the original documents used are in small feint script - tell your tutor if you prefer a transcript or enlargement. Please see below if you have any particular support needs.
