Calligraphy for Beginners

Learn basic calligraphy techniques and how to write the elegant Italic script. Using a calligraphy felt pen you will start with pen exercises to get you used to controlling a broad-edged nib, then continue to write letters in italic and use to make a small project such as a greeting card, bookmark or small book, or write out a favourite poem or quote.

Course aim

Enjoy a relaxing and creative experience in a friendly and supportive group environment. Learn new skills that will build confidence in the use of tools and materials and designing small projects to be shared with family and friends.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a broad-edged nib to make marks and letters and maintain a constant pen angle.
  • Use a pen width to calculate the correct size of the letters of the alphabet.
  • Write miniscule letters of the alphabet in the Italic hand.
  • Plan the layout and design of a short quote.
  • Make a small project using the Italic script.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • It will be useful to bring the following to each class: pencil, ruler, eraser. Calligraphy felt pens will be available to buy from the tutor at the first class (price approx. £3.00).

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation

  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2018
