Life Drawing and Painting

This friendly and relaxed class will provide the opportunity for you to develop your painting and drawing skills as well as your knowledge and appreciation of art working from the life model. This course is designed for all levels and abilities with individual guidance from the tutor. We will look at different approaches and styles of work in life drawing and painting and there will be opportunity to develop your confidence and individual way of working.

Course aim

To develop painting and drawing skills and confidence, working from the life model in a friendly and supportive environment, whilst extending knowledge and appreciation of art.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify and use a variety of techniques to draw/paint the figure
  • Use a technique to draw accurate proportions of the figure
  • Observe and demonstrate tonal value in drawings from the figure
  • Research and discuss artists work
  • Identify an area for improvement in your work

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • 2b pencil (or various grades of pencil/graphite), charcoal and a sketchbook A4 or A3 or A2. Pencil sharpener, rubber and media that you want to use on the course. Advice will be given about materials plus any visual resources required during course.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • During the course we will use various art journals and magazines including International Artist, The Artist, Artists and Illustrators plus some books and web-sites where appropriate. A selection of useful reference books is available at the centre.

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
