Poet of the Month

Ref: C2339861

If you enjoy poetry or want to know more, come along to these informal and interactive monthly sessions. In September we will be reading a selection of poems by Gerard Manley Hopkins. On this occasion we shall draw up a list of poets and topics for the six months to follow, for which your suggestions will be welcome.

Course aim

The aim of this course is both to introduce students to the lives and work of great poets past and present, and to remind ourselves of poets whose work we have enjoyed in the past.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Experience a range of poems from different times, cultures and points of view
  • Discuss how the writer of each poem expresses his or her message, as well as the message itself
  • Present a poem of my own choice, or of my own composition, to the group

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • The poetry for each session will be presented in booklet form, but students are welcome to bring books and printed poems with them.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
