A practical introduction to 'The Art of Beautiful Writing' and how to use lettering can be used creatively to produce attractive cards and artwork. The session will include looking at images of a variety of lettering including beautiful medieval manuscripts and modern uses of lettering.

Course aim

To introduce the fascinating subject of calligraphy and experiment with lettering to create attractive artwork and cards.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have an overview of the variety of calligraphy from Medieval Manuscripts to contemporary calligraphy
  • Recognise 2 styles of calligraphy
  • Use lettering creatively to produce an attractive greeting card
  • Produce a piece of artwork inspired by the designs of Medieval Manuscripts
  • Know where to access resources

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Informal and friendly feedback and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • The tutor can provide all equipment and materials for £2.00 payable on the day

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
