Asking Philosophical Questions

Philosophical questions are distinctive, different from scientific or practical questions for example. Philosophy explores fundamental issues such as who we are (personal identity); what is moral; how best to organize human societies; what we can know; what is real. Each of these issues is examines in a particular 'branch' of Philosophy, such as philosophy of mind; ethics; political philosophy; theory of knowledge (epistemology); or metaphysics. This course provides an introduction to the questions and branches of Philosophy.

Course aim

Find out what kind of questions philosophers ask and how different areas of Philosophy (such as the philosophy of knowledge or ethics) respond to them.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain what is distinctive about philosophical questions
  • Explain in more detail at least one type of philosophical question (such as what we can know)
  • Give an indication of the issues typically discussed in the different branches of Philosophy covered on the course
  • Explain in more detail issues typically discussed in at least one branch of Philosophy
  • Identify new questions or angles which have arisen for you as a result of the course

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

  • Nothing else is needed
