The Secrets of Stonehenge

Stonehenge is one of Britain’s most iconic and mysterious monuments. Who built it, how and why? A century on from when the monument was given to the nation, we explore these questions in this day school as we investigate the prehistoric archaeology of this World Heritage Site. Everyone welcome; no previous knowledge assumed.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to investigate the archaeological monument of Stonehenge.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the different stages in the development of Stonehenge and when they occurred
  • Discuss where the stones that form it may have come from
  • Briefly describe what connections may have existed between the different prehistoric monuments in the Salisbury Plain area
  • Briefly describe the antiquarian interest in Stonehenge and how the monument came to be given to the nation

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Students will require a notepad and pen. All essential reading will be provided.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
