Introduction to Tai Chi and Health Qigong Level 1

This form of exercise combines body movements and mental stimulation. The gentle movements energise the body without putting undue strain on joints and muscles. Practised regularly these exercises will help relive stress and tension, help body balance and increase a general sense of well being.

Course aim

To aid relaxation and balance and improve health with Tai Chi and Health Qigong. Through regular practice, progressing towards achieving health benefits, including better posture and better stability.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • practice basic postures and mindfulness of Yang style Tai Chi.
  • understand the principle movements of Yang style Tai Chi
  • correctly transfer weight in the forms
  • incorporate the breathing in the basic Eight Treasures Health Qigong set
  • Learn how Health Qigong is used in the origin of Chinese medicine.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will learn the forms and exercises by following the tutor, and with practice be encouraged to try them out yourself. You will also be encouraged to practice at home.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • The tutor will give encouragement and indications to the whole group and individuals if corrections are needed. The tutor will also, from time to time provide handouts.

What else do I need to know?

  • Wear loose comfortable clothing that does not restrict movement. Flat comfortable footwear, not just socks. You may wish to bring a drink.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • Videos and books can be purchased through the tutor if required.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • Continued practice will help maintain levels of fitness and many health benefits.

  • You are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2018
