Meditation and Mindfulness

We will be experiencing and practicing Meditation, Mindfulness and Self-Compassion. Our journey will include looking at the teachings of Thich Nhat Hanh, Zen Buddhist, Kristen Neff on Mindful Self-Compassion, Eckhart Tolle on being present and Paul Gilbert's work. We will explore the meaning to ourselves of the Heart and Throat Chakras. This will be an individual journey of self-discovery within a group setting.

Course aim

To give students the opportunity to experience mediation and mindfulness techniques so that they may use these to deal with their reactions to everyday life. To explore the meaning of compassion for the self and others.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course
  • Willing to explore different faiths, views and ways of seeing people, relationships and life.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe some aspects of the Heart and Throat Chakras that I can apply to myself.
  • Practice Meditation techniques at my own pace.
  • Explore Mindfulness in my daily life.
  • Explain the importance of my breath.
  • Apply the teachings that I prefer from Thich Nhat Hanh, Kristen Neff, Eckhart Tolle and Paul Gilbert

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • A creative Journal is part of this course. This can include writing, poetry, postcards, photographs, drawings, handouts etc. This is a record of your personal journey and can include what feels good to you.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Your personal Journal will be an item for you to "show and discuss" in the class.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Students usually like to make notes ... A pen and notebook is required. A Notebook that will become your Personal Journal.

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation

  • Employment or Voluntary Work. This course has the potential to provide you with skills that increase your confidence. Students find that Meditation & Mindfulness techniques help them to remain calm with employers.
