The modern Christmas is a great gathering together of habits, rituals, practices; some are very old and some very recent. In this light- hearted course we will examine why we celebrate Christmas as we do. Amongst other things we will look at the history of Christmas carols, why we bring greenery into the house, light candles and generally let off steam at this time of year.Along the way we will explore the effect Charles Dickens had on the celebrations, examine some Christmas films and analyse the changing design of Christmas cards..There will be plenty of opportunity for you to discuss family habits and customs. This is a splendid opportunity for you to get into the Christmas spirit!
Course aim

By the end of the course I should be able to:
- discuss the ancient origins of the midwinter festival.
- discern and account for the changing design of Christmas cards.
- explain why Dickens is important in the developing history of Christmas.
- ruminate upon the origins of Santa Claus.
- speculate on the future of the festival.
How will I be taught?
- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
