This course allows students to create small projects, whether they are competent sewers or complete learners. How to use existing skills and knowledge they may have, to produce a piece of work, set by the tutor or themselves. Using a sewing machine and accessories, an overlock machine and tools they may have not used before. This course allows students to be creative in there ideas and to interact with other students in producing ways of using fabric and machines in other ways to make fabric art.

Course aim

To provide the opportunity of encouraging Students to sew a variety of small projects.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a sewing machine and accessories, an overlock machine
  • Use correct seam allowances
  • Cut fabric in an economical way without too much wastage, using a rotary cutter and mat where appropriate and scissors.
  • Sew and make small projects including fabric art

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Required: Sewing kit containing bobbins of cotton, tape measure, large pair of fabric scissors & small scissors, un-picking tool, tailors chalk. Ring Binder for handouts, some cotton fabrics . Sewing machines and most other equipment supplied.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
