Red Terror and War Communism, Russia 1918-21

The revolution in Russia led to the end of the Romanov family in 1918 which will be our starting point. The take over of Russia by Bolshevism became central to the lives of millions of Russians returning from the Eastern front. Conflict ensued between various factions within the old Russian Imperial Empire. The ending of the First World War and the Treaties of 1919 also impacted on Russia. Finally and examination of the Russian Civil War and what War Communism meant will be investigated. The role of individuals such as Lenin, Stalin and Trotsky will fall under the spotlight.

Course aim

The main purpose is to provide a brief introduction to events in the period 1918 to 1921 surrounding the end of the First World War and the development of the Russian Civil War.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Interpret the course of the Russian Civil War
  • Evaluate the role of Lenin
  • Explain War Communism

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
