To teach you a range of creative skills . A new one each week. starting with felting we will use local fleece and learn to card it and then hand felt using bamboo blinds , soap and elbow greece. We can make a picture or mat or 3d item if you wish. We will learn knitting. How to cast on and knit a simple square or flower for those a little more experienced. We will turn our hand to hand embroidery and using embroidery silks we will sew a simple item , We will learn how to hand stitch patchwork and make a mat or if you enjoy the skill push towards a larger item to be continued at home. Peg loom weaving is traditional and very therapeutic using wool or fabric to create a hanging or mat/bag. Rag rugging will show us this traditional skill and using old clothes, fabric create a sample which can be made into the starts of a rug or something smaller like a bag . Dying fabrics/thread and paper. We will use friendly dyes and experiment with them to produce a range of exiting colours.

Course aim

To teach you a range of creative skills . A new one each week. Examples are felting, knitting, hand embroidery, patchwork, peg loom weaving, rag rugging, dying fabrics/thread and paper.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • using hand felting use raw materials to make a fabric sample which can be made into an item for e.g. bag, book cover , picture
  • Hand stitch patchwork. Use paper templates and cotton fabric to create shapes that are sewn together by hand
  • Dyes. Use procaine dyes with fabric, thread and in a spray format for papers. add colour
  • Rag Rugging. Use recyled fabrics to create the start of a rug or picture
  • Peg loom weaving . Make a sample using wool and fabric.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
