We will start with paper books and learn how to decorate the front and back covers with appliqué , how to dye pages , make stencils and sew the inside pages together the traditional book making way. We will complete 3 different ways of making the books with recycled materials and new paper. The second half of the course we will use fabric and stitch and make beautiful hand and machine sewn books and decorate the pages and front/back covers using different sewing techniques like slashing and stitching and burning. These books can be given as gifts after or made for yourself .

Course aim

On this course you will make 3 fabric books and 3 paper books. The fabric books will have hand sewing and decoration and the paper books will include dye papers and stitched pages.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • learn how to construct a paper book with stitched pages and a hard covered front and back .
  • How to sew a fabric book together and construct the pages to give a professional finish
  • how to use the sewing machine to complete a decorated front and back cover to a fabric book using free machine embroidery .
  • To complete a cotton fabric sample using the technique slashing . This is to be used for a book cover
  • To refresh students skills with hand stitch embroidery to decorate and embellish fabric for the fabric books either cover or pages or both

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
