Hand Embroidery

This is a very hands on course where you will learn and complete small projects covering lots of different hand stitch techniques. This could be a coaster or bag or purse or onto a garment You will start with hand embroidery using your own designs and silks to learn at least 10 different embroidery stitches . You can choose your favourite. We will then move onto hand stitch cross stitch and then appliqué and tapestry . Hand stitch patchwork will also be demonstrated and you will be able to choose your shape to do this beautiful technique . We can create samples which could be put into a book or made into a blanket or bag or picture or item of your choose

Course aim

To learn the skills of hand embroidery covering many stitches of embroidery but also cross stitch, appliqué and canvas work

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • you will learn 10 different hand embroidery stitches and create a sample of each
  • You will make coaster using cross stitch on Aida fabric
  • You will applique a fabric onto a garment using hand stitch
  • You will create a sample of hand stitch tapestry using wool on canvas
  • you will create a place mat with hand stitch patchwork

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
