More Modern Poets

Ref: C2339633

More Modern Poets will include very recent work by Alice Oswald and Simon Armitage. The tutor will also select a variety of non-British poets. It is anticipated that members of the group will wish to introduce new poems and ideas of their own to the course, such as those found in Sieghart's The Poetry Pharmacy, and space will be made available for this to happen.

Course aim

The course is a continuation of Modern Poetry and Beyond, taught in Spring 2017, and will cover further the poets and ideas introduced in that course.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • The course continues the exciting studies begun in previous poetry courses with the tutor and is open to old and new participants

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify the background and work of Alice Oswald and Simon Armitage
  • Discuss how poetry continues to develop in response to both individual and wider social issues
  • Identify a number of modern non-British poets and poems
  • Read aloud, choose and discuss with confidence poems from the modern era
  • Research information on this period of literature using various sources including IT

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
