Italy's Musical Impact

Ref: C2339553

The influence of Italian music, art, literature and landscape on composers from other countries has been huge: English madrigal composers respond to the Italian repertoire; Monteverdi and Gabrieli influence German composers such as Schütz; Italian opera makes its impact on composers as diverse as Mozart, Chopin and Janáček; Vivaldi’s concertos influence JS Bach, while those of Corelli influence Handel; Liszt and Tchaikovsky respond to Dante; Wolf, Britten, Shostakovich and others set Italian poetry to music; many composers are fascinated by the form of street-theatre known as the Commedia dell’Arte; while Berlioz, Mendelssohn and Elgar are happy just to soak up the atmosphere. Join us to explore just some of this wide-ranging influence.
