Pottery - Create with Clay

This course is designed for both beginners and those with some experience who wish to revisit techniques. Learn how to design, make and decorate pottery work using earthenware clay, slips, underglazes and glazes. Explore handbuilding techniques . Pinching, coiling, slabbing and modelling. Use stencils, stamps and tools to add surface texture and pattern to the clay surface. Add colour to your work through the application of slips, unserglazes and glazes. Develop your creative skills and bring your ideas to life. Experience the excitement of the pottery process from raw clay to the fired kiln.

Course aim

To develop skills in designing, making and decorating handbuilt pottery using earthenware clay, slips and glazes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Research information and use it as part of idea development
  • Evaluate my own work and the work of others
  • Explore and use different techniques of adding surface texture, pattern to clay work
  • Demonstrate effective use of construction techniques in the progression of your ideas
  • Select and apply suitable glazing techniques for final pieces

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • There will be a fee of £12.00 to cover the costs of materials payable at the first session Please bring a suitable apron to wear for working with clay

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
