Pottery - Create with Clay

This course is designed for beginners but will also provide an opportunity for those with some experience to revisit techniques. Learn how to design, make and decorate pottery work using earthenware clay, glazes and underglazes. Explore handbuilding techniques including pinching, coiling, slabbing and tile making. Use stencils, stamps and tools to add surface texture and pattern. Add colour to your work with the application of underglazes and glazes. Develop your creative skills and bring your ideas to life. Experience the excitement of the pottery process from raw clay to the fired kiln.

Course aim

An introduction to designing and making decorative and functional pottery work using hand building techniques with earthenware clay and glazes

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain what a kiln is and the processes clay work goes through
  • Demonstrate how to make pinched and coiled pots
  • Show how to successfully join clay together using slip
  • Select and use a range of tools and materials to add surface texture and pattern to clay work
  • Know what the differences are between underglazes and glazes and how to apply them

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • There is a fee of £12.00 to cover the cost of materials to be paid at first session Please bring a suitable apron to wear for working with clay

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
