Are you interested in developing your writing creatively? Do you want to know how to put together a story, an article or a letter? Are you looking for a supportive and stimulating writing experience? Then this is the course for you. We will be writing during the sessions - using personal experience, memory, imagination and observation to inspire us. Description, form, language and editing will also be explored.

Course aim

To provide a creative, supportive and stimulating writing experience. To increase knowledge and appreciation of writing.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Plan and write a simple poem
  • Plan and write a short story or anecdote
  • Plan and write an article promoting a charity of your choice
  • Edit a piece of your own work

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • There will be some simple homework to do each week, like a list of spellings to learn

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Please bring a pen and paper. A simple dictionary would be helpful too. These can be bought cheap from outlets like the Works and Wilkos

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • Reading materials will be supplied.
